He’s my friend, and a couple of days ago he looked like he’d just gotten out of a concentration camp.† â€Å"Of course,†Damon murmured, as if chastened, but then he went on in even softer tones, â€Å"My little brother has always been popular with both – wel , with ladies present, I wil say genders. Even with male kitsune; which of course is why I am in this mess.† Matt literal y saw red as if he were looking through a haze of blood at Damon. â€Å"Speaking of which, what happened to Sage, Damon? He was a vampire. If we could find him, your problem would be over, right?†Meredith asked. It was a good riposte, just as al Meredith’s cool responses were. But Damon spoke with his fathomless black eyes fixed on Meredith’s face. â€Å"The less you know and say about Sage, the better. I wouldn’t speak of him lightly – he has friends in low places. But to answer your question: No, I would not let Sage make me into a vampire. It would just complicate things.† â€Å"Shinichi said good luck on finding out who he is,†Meredith said, stil calm. â€Å"Do you know what he meant by that?† Damon shrugged fluidly. â€Å"What I know is my own business. He spends time in the lowest and darkest of the Dark Dimensions.† Bonnie burst out, â€Å"Why did Sage go? Oh, Damon, did he go because of us? Why did he leave Talon and Saber to watch over us, then? And, oh – oh – oh, Damon, I’m so sorry! So, so sorry! â€Å"She slid off the love seat and bent her head so that only strawberry curls were visible. With her smal pale hands on the floor to brace her, she looked as if she were about to bow her head to the ground at his feet. â€Å"This is al my fault and everyone’s angry – but it was just so horrible I had to believe the worst things I could think of!† It was a tension-breaker. Nearly everyone laughed. It was so Bonnie, and so true of al of them. So human. Matt wanted to pick her up and put her back on the love seat. Meredith was always the best medicine for Bonnie. But as Matt found himself reaching for her, he was confounded by two other pairs of hands doing the same thing. One was Meredith’s own long, slender olive-skinned hands, and the other pair were male, with even longer tapering fingers. Matt’s hand clenched into a fist. Let Meredith take her, he thought, and his clumsy fist – somehow – got in the way of Damon’s reaching fingers. Meredith lifted Bonnie easily and sat back on the love seat. Damon lifted his dark eyes to Matt’s and Matt saw perfect comprehension there. â€Å"You real y ought to forgive her, Damon,†Meredith, ever the impartial referee, said bluntly. â€Å"I don’t think she’l be able to sleep tonight otherwise.† Damon shrugged, cold as an iceberg. â€Å"Maybe†¦someday.† Matt could feel his muscles clench. What kind of bastard said that to little Bonnie? Because of course she was listening. â€Å"Damn you,†Matt said under his breath. â€Å"Excuse me?†Damon’s voice was no longer languid and falsely polite, but suddenly a whiplash. â€Å"You heard me,†Matt growled. â€Å"And if you didn’t, maybe we’d better go outside so I can say it louder,†he added, soaring on the wings of bravado. He left behind a wail of â€Å"No!†from Bonnie, and a gentle â€Å"Sh,†from Meredith. Stefan said, â€Å"Both of you – â€Å"in a commanding voice, but then he faltered and coughed, which both Matt and Damon took as a chance to sprint for the door. It was stil very warm outside on the boardinghouse porch. â€Å"Is this the kil ing ground?†Damon asked lazily when they had descended the steps and stood beside the gravel path. â€Å"It’s fine by me,†Matt said briefly, knowing in his bones that Damon would fight dirty. â€Å"Yes, this is definitely close enough,†Damon said, flashing an unnecessarily bril iant smile in Matt’s direction. â€Å"You can yel for help while little brother is in the parlor, and he’l have plenty of time to rescue you. And now we’re going to solve the problems of what you’re doing in my business and why you are – â€Å" Matt punched him in the nose. He had no idea what Damon was trying to do. If you asked a guy to step outside, then you asked him to step outside. Then you went for the guy. You didn’t stand around talking. If you tried that, you’d be stuck with the label of â€Å"coward†or worse. You read "The Return: Midnight Chapter 4" in category "Essay examples" Damon didn’t seem like the type who needed to be told that. But then, Damon had always been able to repel any attack on him while he got as many insults as he liked†¦before. Before, he’d have just broken every bone in my hand and gone on baiting me, Matt guessed. But now†¦I’m almost as fast as him, and he simply got taken by surprise. Matt flexed his hand gingerly. It always hurt, of course, but if Meredith could do it to Caroline, then he could do it to†¦ Damon? Damn, did I just take down Damon? Run, Honeycutt, he seemed to hear the voice of his old coach tel ing him. Run. Get out of town. Change your name. Tried that. Didn’t work. Never even got a T-shirt, Matt thought sourly. But Damon wasn’t leaping up like a flaming demon from hel , with the eyes of a dragon and the strength of a raging bul to annihilate Matt. It looked and sounded more as if he were shocked and indignant from his disheveled hair to his earth-stained boots. â€Å"You†¦ignorant†¦childish†¦Ã¢â‚¬ He lapsed into Italian. â€Å"Look,†Matt said. â€Å"I’m here to fight, okay? And the smartest guy I ever knew said: ‘If you’re gonna fight, don’t talk. If you’re gonna talk, don’t fight.'† Damon tried to snarl as he knelt up and pul ed spiny teasel and prickly sida out of his distressed black jeans. But the snarl didn’t come out quite right. Maybe it was the new shape of his canines. Maybe it just didn’t have enough conviction behind it. Matt had seen enough defeated guys to know that this fight was over. A strange exaltation came over him. He was going to keep al his limbs and organs! It was a precious, precious moment. Al right, then, should I offer him a hand? Matt wondered, to be answered instantaneously by, Sure, if you’d offer a hand to a temporarily stunned crocodile. What do you really need ten whole fingers for, anyway? Oh, wel , he thought, turning to go back into the front door. As long as he lived – which, conceded, might not be too long – he would remember this moment. As he went in, he bumped into Bonnie, who was rushing out. â€Å"Oh, Matt, oh, Matt,†she cried. She was looking wildly around. â€Å"Did you hurt him? Did he hurt you?† Matt smacked his fist into the palm of his hand, once. â€Å"He’s stil sitting down back there,†he added helpful y. â€Å"Oh, no!†Bonnie gasped, and she hurried out the door. Okay. Less spectacular of a night. But stil a pretty good one. â€Å"They did what?†Elena asked Stefan. Cold poultices anchored by tight bandages were wrapped around her arm, hand, and thigh – Mrs. Flowers had cut her jeans off short – and Mrs. Flowers was wiping away the dried blood on her neck with herbs. Her heart was pounding with more than pain. Even she hadn’t realized that Stefan was tuned in to the entire house when he was awake. Al she could do was to shakily thank God that he’d been asleep while she and Damon – no! She had to stop thinking about it, and right now! â€Å"They went outside to fight,†Stefan said. â€Å"It’s idiotic, of course. But it’s a matter of honor, too. I can’t interfere.† â€Å"Wel , I can – if you’re done, Mrs. Flowers.† â€Å"Yes, dear Elena,†Mrs. Flowers said, winding a bandage around Elena’s throat. â€Å"Now you shouldn’t get tetanus.† Elena stopped in mid-motion. â€Å"I thought you got tetanus from rusty blades,†she said. â€Å"Da – this one looked brand-new.† â€Å"Tetanus comes from dirty blades, my dear,†Mrs. Flowers corrected her. â€Å"But this† – she held up a bottle – â€Å"is Grand mama’s own personal recipe that has kept many a wound disease-free down the cen – down the years.† â€Å"Wow,†Elena said. â€Å"I never even heard of Grand mama before. Was she a – healer?† â€Å"Oh, yes,†Mrs. Flowers said earnestly. â€Å"She was actual y accused of being a witch. But at her trial they could prove nothing. Her accusers seemed not even to be capable of coherent speech.† Elena looked at Stefan only to find that he was looking at her. Matt was in danger of being dragged off to a kangaroo court – for al egedly assaulting Caroline Forbes while under the influence of some unknown and terrible drug. Anything to do with courts was interesting to both of them. But looking at Stefan’s concerned face, Elena decided not to pursue the subject. She squeezed his hand. â€Å"We have to go now – but let’s talk about Grand mama later. I think she sounds fascinating.† â€Å"I just remember her as a crotchety old recluse, who didn’t suffer fools gladly and thought just about everyone was a fool,†Mrs. Flowers said. â€Å"I suppose I was going down the same path until you children came and made me sit up and take notice. Thank you.† â€Å"We’re the ones who should thank you,†Elena began, hugging the old woman, feeling her heart stop pounding. Stefan was looking at her with open love. It was al going to be al right – for her. I’m worried about Matt, she thought to Stefan, testing the waters more vigorously. Damon’s still so fast – and you know he doesn’t like Matt a bit. I think, Stefan returned with a wry smile, that that is a rather stunning understatement. But I also think you shouldn’t worry until we see who comes back injured. Elena eyed that smile, and thought for a moment about impulsive, athletic Matt. After a moment, she smiled back. She was feeling both guilty and protective – and safe. Stefan always made her feel safe. And right now, she wanted to spoil him. In the front yard, Bonnie was abasing herself. She couldn’t help thinking, even now, about how handsome Damon looked, how wild and dark and ferocious and gorgeous. She couldn’t help thinking about the times he’d smiled at her, laughed at her, come to save her at her urgent cal . She had honestly thought that someday†¦But now she felt as if her heart were breaking in two. â€Å"I just want to bite my tongue out,†she said. â€Å"I should never have assumed anything from what I saw.† â€Å"How could you possibly have known that I wasn’t stealing Elena away from Stefan?†Damon said wearily. â€Å"It’s just the kind of thing I’d do.† â€Å"No, it isn’t! You did so much to free Stefan from prison – you always faced the most danger yourself – and you kept us al from being hurt. You did al that for other people – â€Å" Suddenly Bonnie’s upper arms were being held by hands that were so strong that her mind was flooded with cliches. A grasp of iron. Strong as steel bands. An inescapable grip. And a voice like an icy torrent was coming at her. â€Å"You don’t know anything about me, or what I want, or what I do. For al you know I could be plotting right now. So don’t ever let me hear you talk again about such things, or imagine that I won’t kil you if you get in my way,†Damon said. He got up and left Bonnie sitting there, staring after him. And she’d been wrong. She wasn’t out of tears at al . How to cite The Return: Midnight Chapter 4, Essay examples

Donald Trumps Trade War with China

Question: Discuss about theDonald Trump's Trade War with China. Answer: Introduction The decision of Donald Trump's Trade War with China had a significant impact on the economy. the newspaper article on whether Donald Trump the president of America will be starting a trade war with China infers that after the election, Trump has soften his tone regarding the various issues he has campaigned on. Discussion Although Trump had hailed the alliances with South Korea and Japan, he was not determined about tying up with China. It has been identified that it is of no value to make things difficult for China in political way. As per the US-China traders, the declaration of Trump regarding the bilateral economy is an unprofessional move. It is expected that China will consider countermeasures, if Trump includes China in the list of currency manipulator and implements steep tariffs on the import of China[1]. Declaring China as a currency manipulator will increase the pressure on the Yuans appreciation. The reputation of China will be further hampered and the trade environment between China and US will also become tensed. If there is an imposition of 45 percent tariff on the import of China, the trade relation between US and China will be paralysed[2]. After Barack Obama had taken the position, a 35 percent import tariff was charged on the tires of China. As revenge, China imposed tariffs on the US chicken and the automotive products, thus, both the economy suffered a loss. Conclusion Therefore, the trade war with China will cause China to take tit-for-tat approaches which includes replacing Boeing with Airbus, halting of the auto, iPhone, maize and other products. This will cause both the economy to suffer again. References Globaltimes.cn (2016) https://www.globaltimes.cn/content/1017696.shtml accessed 16 November 2016. Review an article “The XY Files” an Example by

Review an article â€Å"The XY Files† Usually, before having a baby, a married woman who considers herself in a secure relationship, weighs heavily the pros and cons involved in this critical decision. However, a mature single woman weighs the same pros and cons-finances and freedom-and a few more. The author, Lori Gottleib, of the article "The XY Files" is a mature, thinking woman who wanted to conceive. Having the resources for many options, she pondered the parenting process as a modern woman. The only option she did not have was a husband. As she chose how to conceive, she pondered the following: love, choices, and honesty. Need essay sample on "Review an article The XY Files" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed She knew she had not found love. Now her biological clock ticked more loudly every day, and the arguments with her current boyfriend seemed a bit louder, too. Although one friend suggested she simply marry the boyfriend and divorce him later, Gottlieb rejected that idea. When she married, she wanted to have a "core connection" (1) Therefore, just using a man to gain her goal of having a baby wasn't for her. Once Gottlieb decided to have a baby sans husband and sans boyfriend, she wanted the father to be someone not just anyone. She decided to find a sperm donor. Happily This woman who described herself "desperate but picky" in the dating world now seemed to be empowered with the ability to choose (1). She looked at several profiles of several different men. She waited until the sperm bank had an abundant supply of sperm from one particular donor, not only so she could choose this child's father, but also so she could reserve an ample amount of sperm for future children; thus guaranteeing that all her offspring would be related. Finally, in the end, Gottlieb felt as if her decision had been the right decision because she had been honest. As she wrote the article, she was pregnant. She did not deceive a man and "accidentally" get pregnant. She honestly paid for another man's sperm. Now when she dates she finds that men react to her decision with respect. They realize that this woman is totally self-sufficient and does not want to use them. These men realize that when she dates them, she is still looking for three things: love, choices (now in a husband), and honesty. A process that seems natural in a marital relationship-having a baby-becomes more complicated for a woman left to her own devices. The traditional "it takes two" arguments are waning in the media. The author, Lori Gottleib, of the article "The XY Files" chose to use a sperm bank and successfully became impregnated without the assistance of a boyfriend or a husband. She openly discusses the pros and cons concerning her decision. A woman considering this same choice should consider both the financial aspect and nature v. nurture involved in this matter. Financially, a woman would need to have a good reserve of expendable money in order to make the same decision. The initial visit with the doctor costs $400. Since the chances of becoming pregnant with frozen sperm are smaller (only 10%) with frozen sperm compared to "fresh" sperm. A woman must realize that she may need to try numerous times before becoming pregnant. Each month a woman spends about $1,750. to $20,000 for the insemination and the sperm. Although this method is free of the attachments and relationships-a freedom for some women-the monetary charge is an expense. The woman who chooses to use a sperm donor has the option to choose her father's baby characteristic by characteristic. When you fall in love with someone, you do not have this option. Never will you find the guy who scores over 90% in every area. Nose-91% perfect; teeth-94% in whiteness; SAT score 100% acceptable, and on and so-forth. However, when choosing a sperm donor as opposed to a mate, a woman doesn't have to like him personally, just his characteristics. The woman can "engineer" her baby by deciding which characteristics really matter, finding the profile that matches, and buying the sperm from that particular donor. However, something is missing here. If you believe in nature over nurture, the woman may be trading the 91% perfect nose for a personality type she really doesn't like in her son or daughter. How can a woman choose a personality from a profile? People lie on those things, you know. Personally, I think I'll stick to the old-fashioned way of making a baby. Even if my husband "Ed" isn't perfect characteristic-by-characteristic, it would be nice to cuddle with Ed and know that if my son is like him, and in turn, I will like my son. Lingo - Definition and Examples

Lingo s An informal term for the special vocabulary of a particular group or field: jargon.Language or speech that is perceived as strange or unintelligible. Plural: lingoes. Etymology: From the Latin lingua   , tongue Examples and Observations Cowboy Lingo The various buildings on the ranch had their various slang names. The main house, or house of the owner, was known as the white house (its usual color, if painted), the Big House, Bulls Mansh, or headquarters. The bunkhouse was equally well known as the dog-house, dice-house, dump, shack, or dive, while the cook-shack, if it was a separate building, was spoken of as the mess-house, grub-house, feed-trough, feed-bag, nose-bag, or swallow-an-git-out trough.   (Ramon Frederick Adams, Cowboy Lingo. Houghton, 2000) Australian Lingoes To speak the lingo is to become a member of a group that shares a sense of itself and expresses that sense in its own language. In the sense of the Great Australian Lingo that group consists of all its speakersmost Australians, in fact. There are also many other lingoes, past and present, that are and have been spoken in Australia by different groups, or speech communities as they are called. . . .What does the term TALK RIVER mean, for example? You almost certainly will not know unless you worked in or were close to the Murray River boat trade. In that speech community, it means to talk about matters relating to the river, its people and its business. Unless you are involved with the welding trade you would be unlikely to know that STICK and TIC refer to different forms of weldingSTICK is with flame heat and TIC with an electric arc. Nor would you know what a KROMER CAP is.  (Graham Seal, The Lingo: Listening to Australian English. UNSW Press, 1999) Hospital Lingo Like any specialized jargon, the shoptalk used by residents not only conveys facts but provides a running commentary on the absurdities of hospital life...A sampling of current resident-speak follows, drawn from the wards of a busy teaching hospital.Banana bag: an intravenous solution containing a liquid multivitamin that colors the fluid a bright yellow, used in undernourished or alcoholic patients. Doc-in-the-box: an urgent-care walk-in clinic. Hes moonlighting at a doc-in-the-box downtown.Gomer: shorthand for Get out of my emergency room. Any undesirable patient, usually one that is unkempt, demented, combative or any combination of the above...Tail-light sign: when a patient (usually elderly) is dropped off at an emergency room by relatives who drive away before an evaluation is complete, forcing the patient to be admitted to the hospital whether or not his medical condition requires it.Wallet biopsy: checking a patients insurance or financial status before embarking on expensive procedures.  (adapted from Hospital Lingo: Whats a Bed Plug? An L.O.L. in N.A.D. by Sheilendr Khipple. The New York Times, May 13, 2001) The Use of War Lingo by Journalists Back in August, the [Associated Press] issued a memo about how to convey campaign coverage, and it included this passage: war lingo - use criticized instead of attacked, or choose a better verb to describe what the candidate is doing, i.e., challenging, doubting, etc. Also avoidable: launch an assault, take aim, open fire, bombard. AP Deputy Managing Editor for Standards Tom Kent lays out the thinking behind the rules: We’ve long felt it’s a good idea to avoid weapons metaphors when we’re not talking about real weapons. Even beyond evoking memories of violent events, we think frequent use of these terms in non-military situations smacks of overdramatization and hyping, writes Kent via e-mail.  (Erik Wemple, No More Taking Aim,’ ‘Blasting,’ ‘Sniping’! The Washington Post, December 20, 2012) A Parody of Social Science Lingo The lingo used by sociologists and such annoys many reasonable people. Richard D. Fay of M.I.T. is one of them. Last week the Washington Star picked up a letter he had written to the Harvard Alumni Bulletin in which he showed how the Gettysburg Address would sound, lumbered up in that lingo: Eight and seven-tenths decades ago, the pioneer workers in this continental area implemented a new group based on an ideology of free boundaries and initial conditions of equality. We are now actively engaged in an overall evaluation of conflicting factors . . . We are met in an area of maximum activity among the conflicting factors . . . to assign permanent positions to the units which have been annihilated in the process of attaining a steady state. The courageous units, in being annihilated . . . have integrated it to the point where the application of simple arithmetical operations to include our efforts would produce only negligible effects . . .It is preferable for this group to be integrated with the incompleted implementation . . . that we here resolve at a high ethical level that the deceased shall not have been annihilated without furthering the projectthat this group . . . shall implement a new source of unhampered activityand that political supervision composed of the integrated units, for the integrated units, and by the integrated units shall not perish from . . . this planet. Shakespeare's Mystery Identity Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Shakespeare's Mystery Identity - Research Paper Example Regardless of their nature, conspiracy theories are, by their very nature, engaging. If it were not for the fact that conspiracy theories and alternate views of history were not engaging and interesting, individuals would not integrate with a belief in them. However, even though a litany of different conspiracy theories exist with respect to the way in which the world exists and what has taken place in the past, a thread of commonality exists between almost all of these conspiracy theories; namely, the dearth of evidence that exists to back them up. One of the more engaging conspiracy theories that exists within literature, and the analysis thereof, is the theory that William Shakespeare was not the sole author of all of the work so that are attributed to him. This theory has many different variants; however, the most popular denotes the fact that William Shakespeare was merely a pseudonym through which different individuals published the work so that it now so commonly and widely be en attributed to William Shakespeare. The first and most common point of interest that those who do not believe William Shakespeare was an individual capable of such works of poetic symbolism and colorful language point to is the fact that the William Shakespeare that exists in recorded history did not possess a formal education. As such, individuals who approach the issue from this particular standpoint Harold the fact that even though William Shakespeare could have been self educated, his overall level of understanding for the English language, unique symbolism, philosophical interpretation, religious overtones, and a firm grasp of history is extraordinarily unlikely for an individual that was not of â€Å"high birth†.... Although it is true that William Shakespeare inherited and â€Å"Honorable† title from his father, this title in and of itself was rather low as compared to the level of education and knowledge that Shakespeare possessed (Kingsley-Smith 158). It must be understood that within the current era, it is quite possible for an individual of low status and low birth to integrate with high levels of education and better themselves in an effective manner. However, within Shakespeare’s time, low birth was akin to a sentence of austerity and relative hardship. As the middle class did not firmly exist within the United Kingdom until the 17th century, it is unlikely that an individual of relatively humble birth could’ve integrated with such a high level of education from such an early age. Another definitive argument that is pointed she was with respect to the fact that William Shakespeare was intimately aware of the affairs of European court. What is meant by this is that eac h and every oil house that existed within Europe, during and before Shakespeare’s lifetime, operated within a given set of defined and traditional guidelines. As such, a familiarity with the way in which British court operated and the Royal decisions were made upon the throne did not extend universally to the way in which French affairs of court, Danish affairs of court, or Italian affairs of court were delineated. As such, beyond merely a great depth in education, Shakespeare was uniquely and seemingly intimately aware of the way in which affairs of court were conducted; blending one to believe that the individual who was ultimately responsible many of Shakespeare’s works was in fact a royal or an esteemed individual with

Development Psycology Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

Development Psycology - Research Paper Example They come to a position where they successfully complete their daily activities independently. Preschool kids (those who are between 2 to 3 years old) are able to put on and take off basic clothing articles. They are able to manage clothing with zippers and use simple gadgets like spoons. They do independently open doors with doorknobs and string together beads in threads. As the children crosses three years they would be able to manage clothing with buttons and do similar less complicated tasks that require basic motor skills. They would be able to use scissors to cut paper and draw simple images. They learn to hold pencil and develop interest in drawing. Once children crosses the preschool age and reaches the kindergarten age we can see a considerable increase in the fine motor skills of children. At their fourth age they age they will be able to dress and undress themselves; successfully operating buttons and hooks. Kindergarten children are thus able o manipulate a fork. They bec ome dexterous enough to use scissors and cut and make shaped pieces. Even though children develop at their won rate, most children go through the normal development stages. The drawing skill of preschool children would be very basic. They just make basic scribbles when kindergartners are able to draw circles, crosses, rectangles and other consistent symbols. The artistic gesture of preschool children and kindergartners vary considerably. When the kid is three years old (preschool), he attempts forming face shapes and by his fourth age he forms human shapes. As he progresses in his fourth age he starts making human forms with legs and arms. Soon they start to include other images like houses, boats, sun, mountain, trees and ponds in their pictures. This indicates a considerable improvement in the pencil handling skills which shows a big progress in the fine motor skills. It is quite important to understand the level of fine motor skills of

Issues Surrounding Barriers To Leadership And Leadership Development Management Essay

Issues Surrounding Barriers To Leadership And Leadership Development Management Essay Current leadership practised today goes further than getting people to do what a leader wants them to do. Leadership today is concerned with bringing out the best quality of ability people have to offer and helping to focus an individuals energy and zeal along a united front to achieve common goals. Outstanding leaders assess their own abilities to lead. Todays leaders build teams and oversee the essential elements of teamwork-communication, cooperation, and collaboration. Effective leaders promote shared values among employees, such as open communication, honesty, quality, respect, and mutual support. A clearer understanding of what leadership and leadership development means is necessary in other to understand the issues surrounding barriers to effective leadership and development the construction industry. Leadership as a term has different meaning to different individuals and organisations. Prof. Kenneth Clark defined leadership as an activity or set of activities, observable to others that occur in a group, organisation or institution or institution involving a leader and followers who willingly subscribe to common purposes and work together to achieve them. (Philip 2003). Harry Truman also defined it as the ability to get men to do what they dont want to do and like it (Philip 2003). On the other hand, Leadership development refers to any activity that improves the quality of leadership within an organisation. These activities could range from courses offered in schools to seminars and retreats focused on developing the leadership skills and attitudes of individuals. In the world today, the construction industry plays a major role in the national economy of countries both developed and developing due to the high demand for industrialisation and urbanisation. Due to this fact, essential and effective leadership skills such as good communication skills, Strategic vision and an understanding of the industry are the most essential traits required. The right leadership in the construction industry results in self-managed teams and shared leadership among team members. Leadership development will be required for the advancement, growth, and continued existence of construction businesses in the next millennium. Unfortunately, from the research survey carried out by the chartered institute of building (CIOB) in 2008, the construction industry as a whole was lacking in leadership and most companies in the industry were lacking in developing leadership potentials of employees due to a lot of barriers. This essay is focused on identifying these barriers and critically discussing issues surrounding them. Looking at the construction industry in general, irrespective of country, it was discovered that the a lot of barriers hampered the growth of leadership and leadership development, based on a research survey carried out by the chartered institute of building (CIOB) in 2008, where questionnaires were administered to members of the institute and members of other organisations in the construction industry. Results obtained showed that the major barriers to leadership development and leaders reaching their maximum potential were a lack of opportunity and organisational culture. Other barriers identified were poor communication skills, lack of skills and training, lack of general management skills in work force, lack of incentives, political environment, society/national culture, self confidence, and autocratic management. Further barriers to leadership development where, lack of leadership development programs and individual/personal barriers. However, a lot of issues are what gives rise to these barriers which makes it impossible for proper leadership development in the construction industry. These issues in one way or another are inter related to all the barriers obstructing leadership. Many of the problems arising in an organisation are as a result of people failing to communicate properly which degenerates to confusions and leads to failure in project plan. Communication basically referred to as the exchange of information and ideas from one person to another. A lot of issues arise which make it impossible for leaders to communicate effectively with other members of the organisation in the construction industry. One of this is problem of perception, which adversely affects how we interpret a message gotten from another based on how we perceive the person and sometimes the wrong message is delivered and ultimately has an adverse effect on a project. Secondly, is the problems of culture, background and bias, which makes people to be prejudiced at times ultimately affecting the way a message is received and interpreted thus interfering with the communication process. Thirdly, is the personal attitude of an individual, such as focusing on ones self and feeling superior to others or defensive towards them and sometimes just plain ego hinders effective communication which results in conflicts and confusion arising. Other issues which also hinders effective communication could also be due to stress, as individuals tend to react differently when u nder stress and thus affects the way a message is received and understood for the proper instructions to be carried out. Organisational structure is another key barrier to leadership development in the construction industry. The organisational culture is simply referred to as the a system of shared values, attitudes, beliefs, and experiences of an organisation which has being acquired over a period of time which distinguish one organisation from another and affects the way in which members of the organisation react to the opportunities and threats affecting the organisation. Sometimes, this culture has an adverse effect on an organisation and acts as a barrier to change and diversity whereby, the culture is so ingrained that they are ok with the working dynamics and refuse to respond to change from a new leader trying to bring about change or introducing leadership development programme which will improve the organisation but prefer the status quo. Employees are thus, forced to conform to existing culture and potential leadership qualities in employees are subdued and never achieved which affects leadership development in the organisation. A clear example of this, is seen in the UK construction industry which is seen as a predominantly male (that is young white male) dominated, coupled with harsh working conditions which has been translated into a culture embodying crisis, conflict, masculinity and embracing a casual approach to working norms of commitment. This has being summed up accordingly by Harvey and Ashworth (1993)as construction having an image of being a difficult, demanding and unbecoming occupation with an adversarial culture. Gale (1992) also observed that,.it seems that it is in the interest of those who have chosen to work in the industry to maintain the maleness of the culture, thus keeping conflict and crises as preferred aspects of everyday working life. This culture of the industry makes it difficult for female, other ethnic minorities and better educated people from considering construction as a worthwhile career option which will bring about a change in the industry as a lot of this individual coul d have potential leadership qualities which will make the industry to be better organised and developed. This organisational culture has made it a particularly unattractive profession for potential individuals who might consider going into the profession as it is alleged to have a casual, fragmented and hierarchical nature which makes it incapable of functioning in a harmonized, homogenous way when dealing with issues relating to development, training, education etc. This fact has being recognised by professionals and clients in the industry and acts as a major barrier for potential change to occur in the organisation as members are strongly opposed to change occurring in the industry. The society/national culture also acts as a barrier to most leadership development and the potential for leadership to be developed in organisations. A typical example of this is seen the Nigerian context where the cultural characteristic of leadership in Nigerian society is mostly patrimonial-based on hereditary within members of a family. The leadership mantle is masculine which is mainly handed down to the first male child and where this is unattainable, other family members play a major role in the selection of predecessors to head the organisation. Family members also have strong influences on the decisions taken by these leaders who may or may not have acquired the proper training qualification or skills that is required from a leader. A notable case of patrimonial selected leadership can be seen in DANTATA SAWOE which is arguably the most prominent indigenous construction company in Nigeria. Like most indigenous companies, it is owned by a family with about fifty years of exi stence and its leadership has gone through the generations of the kin of the founder and is still expected to go down the lineage. With this style of leadership style, there is the tendency for individual leaders to try to distinguish themselves and carve out a niche for himself. This may lead either to the leader given diminutive chances for various individuals under him to participate and air their views in such organizations. Secondly, because the leadership consist of a group that shares similar beliefs and values, the organisation portray weakness in its cultural diversity and place more emphasis on their own culture. Further barriers to leadership and leadership development are a lack of opportunity and lack of skills and training in the industry. A general lack of opportunities exist in the industry for employees and individuals to improve their leadership skills and ability as most organisations under-invest in leadership development programmes and employees have no access to new experiences coupled with the fact that organisations failed to meet their employees expectation and needs all act as a barrier to improving leadership skills. From the survey carried out by the CIOB, it showed that 25% believed that a lack of opportunity was the greatest barrier to potential leaders becoming leaders and that about 45% of companies in the industry did not have a formal succession plan or leadership strategy. A lack of leadership development program in most organisation is a key issue as most organisations do not invest in training their employees or improving their skills by organising seminars or sending them on courses which in the long run benefits the company or organisation by enabling the company to be better organised and co-ordinated. In some other cases, where training is offered by the organisation, the leadership development methodology is often wrong as employees receive this training without development as sometimes what is learnt is not applicable to the industry directly or entirely different. Moreover, a shortage of skills in the industry also acts as a barrier to leadership development this is as a result of the poor image projected by the industry, low incomes and a lack of academic/vocational courses and apprenticeship where all contributing factors to a general lack of skill in the construction industry in UK. Also, a lack of general management skills in work force acts as a barrier to leadership development as poor management often result in leaders not delegating work properly and results in assigning the wrong people for the wrong job and at the wrong time, this is as a result of being disorganised and not being able to organise schedules. This barrier could arise as a result of not having the proper management skills such as, having a positive attitude to work which influences employees to have such attitude and work is done and finished on time. By not be trustworthy and honest also affects management skills. By not been arrogant or imposing but be able to listen to other views of individuals and reach a compromise. A typical example of poor management skill is seen in autocratic management in which only the leaders views are taken as utmost and final leaving no chance for subordinates to take initiatives but the leader prefers to hand down instructions which amounts to bad mentoring. This practice is very common with most construction companies in Nigeria specifically with the organisation CTA PARTNERS LTD where the companys head felt other members of staff where not competent enough to do particular work and refused to allow staffs use their initiative which often resulted in projects not being completed on time and acquired more cost for the client and all involved in the project. However, when proper management skills are administered in an organisation, it can result in an efficient, productive team of happy workers whereas if not it can lead to a general feeling of resentment, bad atmosphere, loss of productivity and loss of team morale. Further barriers also could be a lack of incentives in the industry such as not recognising and rewarding team members or employees who have made valuable contribution to the industry. As if this is done it motivates and inspires employees to take on more challenges to reach the organisations goal. In addition to all the barriers mentioned above is personal/individual barrier imposed by employees on themselves. Issues surrounding this barrier are numerous such as the unwillingness to developed or coached and employees assume that they know all whereas they are lacking in a lot of leadership abilities and skills. Another clear case is the inability or unwillingness to try something new and not being open to innovation but prefer to carry on with the way things are run in the industry. Closely followed by this negative reaction to feedbacks or change and refuses to change to make the company operate better. Next is the issue of being threatened by others (especially those below in rank or subordinates) this causes envy to arise and victimisation through creating obstructions that would make it impossible for their potential leadership skills to manifest. Other issues are sometimes our need for power and recognition coupled with greed makes it impossible for leadership skills to b e developed properly. In conclusion, having identified the barriers and issues surrounding leadership and leadership development, in other to resolve these issues, it is essential for leadership programmes to include education and training particularly in communication skills and general management training so that individuals can harness their leadership skills. A conclusion reached from the research survey was that recognition of effective and successful leaders within the industry would help to promote leadership and inspire others and these leaders could serve as mentors to the younger generation. Also, the perceived organisational culture of industry has to change so barriers which prevent opportunities for people to show leadership potential are removed and the industry is better organised and co-ordinated improving the working culture of the industry. Strategies for identifying potential leaders should also be in cooperated into organisations if the industry is to develop leaders. Another critical issue is addressing the shortage of skills in the industry; this can be remedied by making sure the industry strives to retain its skilled workforce, employing graduates and offering the appropriate professional development to achieve their potential for leadership management careers in construction and continuous training to ensure employees are competent enough to do the job. All these factors if addressed will provide a level ground for leadership potential to be developed in the construction industry REFERENCES Gale, A.W (1992), The construction industrys male culture must feminize if conflict is to be reduced: the role of education as a gatekeeper to male construction industry, in Fenn, P., Gameson, R. Organizing Function of Management Essay

The purpose of this paper will be to evaluate the organizing function of management. The organizing function of management develops internal organizational structure. A key role of the organizing function is to address how people interact in various business environments. Management uses organizing activities to allocate resources, define responsibility, establish expectations, and group employees. â€Å"At high-tech firms such as Google that rely on employee skills, knowledge, and creativity to remain competitive, the importance of people is evident as well† (Bate & Snell, 1, 2009). Human Resources Management at Google Human resources management is a formal system used to manage people in a business environment (Bate & Snell, 2009). Human capital is a source of competitive advantage that is irreplaceable. According to Bate & Snell, â€Å"human resource planning occurs in three stages: planning, programming, and evaluating† (2009). Perfecting the art of human resources management can provide strategic value to organizational performance. The Google Company has secured its place as one of the world’s leading employers. Goggles strategy for effective human resources management is providing employees with unparalleled benefits, perks, and opportunities. Lazlo Bock, Google’s vice president of people operations states freedom, curiosity and highly trained employees has forged Google’s success (HR Focus, 2008). Planning requires Google to forecast future job trends based market fluctuations and company growth. In 2005, Google was hiring about â€Å"10 people a day, adding to a workforce of more than 5,000† (Lohr, 2005). Currently, Google employs approximately 20, 000 people with various backgrounds and skills. Closely monitoring economic trends and labor supply forecast allows the company to manage all available resources. The following rules of engagement with employees, outline by Lazlo Bock, have contributed to Goggles effective human resources management. * Hire learners. They are inquisitive, and when they fail, they will ask how they can do better. * Give people the tools and resources to succeed; then let them. * Work on small projects in small teams. * Keep structures flat. Especially as the company gets big, information needs to flow up. * Discuss everything you can publicly. * Give performance-driven raises. This is helpful in controlling turnover and enhancing retention. * Reward success, don’t penalize failure. â€Å"If you don’t fail, you’re not doing your job well.† Quarterly goals are set and performance evaluations are based on these; the company aims for a 70% success rate. Technology at Google Google was founded on the principle of â€Å"organizing the world’s information and make it universally accessible and useful† (Google, 2009). The company original began as a search engine provider. The company quickly expanded products and services to include software, e-mail service, advertising platforms, desktop products, mobile devices, and mapping tools. Google’s list of services and products are too extensive and increasingly expanding. Google’s success can be attribute to the company’s’ expansion of technological services. Google recent advancement has been the development of a new operating system, Chrome, designed to rival its biggest competitors. â€Å"Unlike Windows, Chrome OS is an open-source project like the Linux operating system that’s popular with techies, which means outside software developers are welcome to work on it† (Graham, 7, 2009). The release of Chrome OS as a free open source operating system creates competition with Microsoft’s Windows. Google Assets Google’s ability to control the search engine markets has allowed the company to prosper from advertising campaigns. According to Schonfeld, â€Å"of the 137 billion estimated total searches performed in the U.S. last year, 85 billion were done on Google; nearly 90 percent of all the growth in search volume was also captured by Google (2008). Google’s profits should spike as the country climbs out of recession â€Å"because the company has weeded out a lot of frivolous expenses during the recession† (Liedtke & Girard, 2009). Google went public at $85 dollars a share 2004; current estimates place Google shares at $430 a share (Liedtke & Girard, 2009). The statistics indicated that Google has effectively organized companies assets during difficult economic time. Conclusion  Human resources management and technology play a crucial in business success. Google has perfected work environments that keep employees happy and provides the necessary resources to remain competitive as a company. â€Å"David MacDonald, who joined Google as an account manager in October 2001, says, It wasn’t groundbreaking – search engines had been around for years – but it had a different approach and was all about the people† (Smith, 6, 2008). Google remains one of the world’s leading companies engrossed in the technological revolution. Much of the organizations success arises from Google’s ability to venture into multiple applications. Google refuses to rely on the company’s search engine capabilities to sustain growth. The ability to adapt to economic demands and competition has facilitated Google’s organizational structure.

Illustrative Essay Essay

In society today we look at magazines and movies and strive to be just like the people we see. The guys in these magazines have six packs and arms with muscles the size of Mt. Everest. And the girls are all size double zeros with no meat anywhere on their bodies. A lot of Americans work out and diet to accomplish the goal of having these body types, but some go to drastic measures to get it. Many eating disorders and their side effects are taking over the lives of Americans every day. Anorexia Nervosa is the number one eating disorder in America. One in every one hundred woman suffers from this disorder. Anorexia is where you deprive your body from any food. This can create many problems with the body. But later on, you can do so much as to give yourself certain heart diseases and some women even lose their menstrual cycles. Anorexia has controlled the lives of many celebrities like Karen Carpenter (who actually died from it), Mary Kate Olsen, and Tara Reid. The last eating disorder that is an issue in the USA is obesity. Many people don’t think obesity is an eating disorder, but in fact it is. Everyone’s standard of obesity is obviously ifferent, but on a national scale PBS says that seventy three percent of Americans are overweight or obese. Obesity can cause diabetes, strokes, heart attacks, and high blood pressure which are all life threatening problems. In conclusion, many eating problems are taking over America. There are healthier ways to get the body image you want. Don’t put your body at risk just to be what society wa nts you to be. You should be healthy, but you should become healthy, in a healthy manner. If you or anyone you know is struggling from an eating disorder, you should seek help as soon as possible.

Daughter of Han, on Confucian Values - 1616 Words

No matter what one s social status was, if one was born in China pre twentieth century, one would have at least rudimentary knowledge of Confucian gender values, whether through direct study or through traditions that were already soaked in Confucian ideology. In upper-class society, daughters are taught through study of classical Confucian texts and as a result most have a great understanding and following of those values; sons are likewise taught their role and are required to follow it if they desire to move up in society. In the lower social strata, it is a bit more difficult to tell how integrated Confucian gender values are because one can see from accounts by upper class scholars, artists, and during late-Imperial China,†¦show more content†¦The few differences, I believe, were mostly a simple result of difference in time periods. The difference itself is can be summed up in a quotation of Ning s words concerning one of her masters at one of the households she worked at: the Third Mistress had power6. This power to control household matters was one shared by all free women, but the difference lied in the extent of the power. It was a power that allowed them to not only control the development of their children, but also the hired work within the household who served them.
